How to Make this Refreshing Blood Orange Spritzer!

Blog Comments & Tips

A stunningly beautiful and refreshing drink!

Our Blood Orange Spritzer is vibrant in color and just as bright in flavor. This non-alcoholic spritzer is a twist on the syrupy sweet Italian sodas, and a deliciously refreshing change to plain sparkling water. Although this recipe does use a bit of agave nectar, we use no refined sugar to make this drink. So, if you are looking for a healthy alternative to your everyday soda, then this is it!

I am definitely a foodie and like everything from healthy, to refined gourmet, to street food. Because I love all food and enjoy thirst-quenching drinks of all kinds, I try to look for healthier alternatives that taste great - as often as possible.

You have probably noticed that we use agave nectar in place of refined sugar in many of our recipes. It has a lower glycemic index than sugar, has a lovely warm flavor, and unlike honey, it dissolves well in beverages. The bonus is that it’s vegan, which means we are able to provide more of our recipes to a wider variety of dietary preferences. In this drink recipe, you could certainly use simple syrup or even granulated sugar. However, we chose to use blue agave nectar for our Blood Orange Spritzer for its strong caramel notes, which complement the flavor of the blood orange.

Blood oranges are at their very best during wintertime, when in season from December through April in California. So when these special oranges showed up in the produce section of our local market at the beginning of June, I was thrilled to bring some home and incorporate them into a few recipes.

If you have never tried a blood orange, slice one open and take in the beauty of all the colors. The flesh of a blood orange is stunningly beautiful and somewhat resembles a color wheel. With colors ranging from black, and deep crimson to amber, this gorgeous fruit is truly a sight to behold.

Their flavor is a bit sweeter and more floral than other varieties of oranges, and also seem to be less acidic and tart. Like all types of oranges, they are high in Vitamin C. However, this stunningly beautiful fruit is also full of anthocyanins, which are known for anti-cancer properties. These antioxidants have been found to be a powerful weapon in helping to lower your risk of chronic health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

With double the Vitamin A and nine times the antioxidants as a navel orange, there is no reason not to try one!

Don’t be afraid to experiment a little with this fruit. Put them on salads or in cocktails. Make a beautiful sorbet, or use them as a healthy topping for yogurt or ice cream. Feeling adventurous? Think outside the box and use segments of a blood orange in a fresh salsa, or the juice in a sauce as an accompaniment to grilled white fish or seared scallops. Whichever way appeals to you, just give them a try.
